IF YOU'VE BEEN A VICTIM OR THINK YOU'VE BEEN

  • Go to a safe location away from the attacker
  • Contact a Sexual Assault Response Coordinator [ SARC ] for MCRD and the Western Recruiting Region
  • Seek medical care as soon as possible. Even if you do not have any visible physical injuries, you may be at risk of becoming pregnant or acquiring a sexually transmitted disease.
  • Ask the healthcare provider to conduct a sexual assault forensic examination [ SAFE ] to preserve forensic evidence.
  • If you suspect you have been drugged, request that a urine sample be collected
  • Preserve all evidence of the assault. Do not bathe, wash your hands or brush your teeth. Do not clean or straighten up the crime scene.
  • Write down, tape or record by any other means all the details you can recall about the assault and your assailant.

REPORTING OPTIONS FOR ACTIVE DUTY SERVICE MEMBERS EXPLAINED

RESTRICTED

Restricted includes confidentiality with some exceptions and limitations: Victim decides not to report the sexual assault to anyone in law enforcement or anyone in the military, including friends, Command, or Chaplain, and does not seek assistance or treatment, except as stated below:

  • Option to confidentially receive counseling, advocacy, support and healthcare* [ * may vary by state reporting requirements for medical ] without having to report the crime to law enforcement or another military authority
  • “Restricted reporters” who are covered under this confidential reporting option include; Victim Advocates [ VAs ], Uniformed Victim Advocates [ UVAs ], Sexual Assault Response Coordinators [ SARCs ], Medical* and Mental Healthcare Providers
  • Chaplains are available for confidential support, but not to receive a restricted report
  • Exceptions to restricted reports may apply [ e.g, danger/harm to victim or others, fitness for duty concerns, or being compelled to testify by a judge. ] • Victims may change a report to unrestricted at any time

 

UNRESTRICTED

Unrestricted initiates an official investigation of the crime:

  • Not confidential
  • Initiates an official report to command
  • Report to command will identify you as the victim and include any other information which was provided about the accused offender
  • Will allow the commander to initiate the full range of protections and rights available to you
  • All services and assistance available as in restricted reporting
  • Victim will receive monthly case updates from the SARC or Advocate
